Anonymous said: I would absolutely love to learn how to surf but I really poor vision, I have to wear contacts all the time. I really don't know what to do about it. Any suggestions?

surfandbefree:

I wear contacts and admittedly I don’t surf in them all the time (I can get by without wearing them) but there are times when I have. I know the official advice is not to wear contacts in the sea because of eye infections, going blind, sea monsters, nuclear submarines, aliens from outer space and all the other things we get warned about on a daily basis, but I take that calculated risk.

There are a number of things you can do to give yourself the best chance of not having any problems.

  • If you can, use disposable contacts for surfing
  • Try not to rub your eyes whilst out in the water. The last thing you want is sand, dirt or sun block in your eyes (I speak from experience, it’s a real fucker)
  • keep your eyes closed whilst duck diving (personally I hate this aspect of wearing lenses but I figure it’s a small price to pay)
  • As soon as you get out of the water remove your contacts
  • Once removed rinse your eyes out with saline

All of the above is personal advice and goes against what the people in white coats would recommend, so it has to be your call. I would hate for you to go blind but I would also hate for you to miss out on learning to surf.

One final thought. If you wanting to be able to surf is something that burns inside you so strongly that you won’t quit until you can but the idea of wearing your lenses is freaking you out, maybe think about saving up for laser eye surgery. I would look at all the options before giving up on your dream. I truly wish you the best. Please let me know how you get on and what you decide :) xx

smart.
